There are two types of places in Las Vegas: the places where the rich people go, and the places where the rich people used to go. The Hotel Cortez is a place in the latter. I you want to see the shell of yesteryear Las Vegas, the Hotel Cortez is for you. The room was nice enough. You can go down to the main lobby at 6:30 AM and see old matrons hard  at work on the slot machines. Or you can take a walk over to the "Fremont Street Experience" and go to the casinos that are well past their heyday and imbue your clothes with the smell of cigarettes from the person puffing away on the stool next to you at the $5 black jack table. Granted, the Cabana room to which I was upgraded was clean, although it had a strange antiseptic smell, which as annoying until I go used to it. The staff was pleasant, about as pleasant as one can expect when working in a place that hasn't seen a good time since "Bugsy Seigel owned the joint." In terms of transportation convenience, it was impossible to get a cab to the Convention during CES, because, as the Valet said "they don't come up this far anymore." Thus, I took public transportation, which is surprisingly good for a town where you'd think the only vehicle to share is a limousine. There is a very, very nice coffee house across the street from The Cortez. It is called, The Beat Coffeehouse. The food is better than casino fare, the clientele is artistic and Internet access is free. It made the stay a whole lot more pleasant. I felt as if I was in a city that had a modicum of diversity instead of an urban setting dedicated the the roll of the dice. Would I stay there again, dunno. Depends on my travel budget.

I have stayed at the El Cortez 7 times in the last ten years, always in a King tower room. To economize, I stayed in a Pavilion Room. It was 20% less costly than the tower and my car was right outside the room. Granted, the room was quite a bit smaller, along with the bathroom. But, it's VEGAS! How much are you in the room? Overall, it was an even better  bargain than the tower.

This is the second time I stayed at El Cortez. It's a little out of the way, but you have to walk everywhere in Vegas. You don't have to walk far once you get to the hotel, unlike strip hotels. It's quite. If you're familiar with downtown, then it's a good place to stay. If you're not familiar or want more of a Vegas feel, stay somewhere else.

Not a bad and inexpensive place to stay. I stayed there over a weekend with a few friends. We were celebrating the 21st birthday of one of my son's friend. We had a blast a the Fremont experience was only one block away. Me and my son stayed in the rooms that were located in the tower section of the hotel and they were very nice. I was actually pleasantly  surprised. However, one of my buddies stayed in a room that was not in the tower section (#2218) and it sucked! It reminded me of living in a run-down modular manufactured home. His room had a funny smell (like smoke & sweat) and it was very small compared to the room I had. My overall experience with this hotel was very good and I would stay there again if I was just going to hang out on Fremont St.

Check in was delayed for nearly two hours until a room could be cleaned. We were in the old ("Vintage") section of the hotel but our room was very spacious and comfortable. No elevator availablity to our room was a nuisance. Our room was directly above the casino and some noise and even tobacco smoke made their ways into our non-smoking room. The downtown  area has its seedy spots but the "Fremont Experience" was close by with lots of casinos and eating spots. All in all not a bad experience for such an old venue.

Hotel housekeeping is not taking pride in job here's a fun game play how many socks can you find in your room from previous guests even after they were made aware of the exact location in the room the only positive about this. Stay was the casino you can't beat those table minimums makes your night last longer without the regret of blowing through all  of your vacation budget

VERY small room. No table for laptop. Downtown is good location and a short drive on Vegas Blvd and you are on the strip. Adequate room as we did not spend much time in the room anyway except to sleep.

the location is a little inconvenient but the free breakfast, business center with free internet and copying , free local calls and free airport shuttle and strip shuttle (one way only to strip) combined with the low price make it a great hotel for the budget minded. the two cab rides back from the strip didnt bother us at all
