Much of the country imagines Las Vegas as a wasteful oasis of water fountains, light shows and enormous buffets. Because they live in the middle of the desert, however, most regular inhabitants of the city are mindful of the need for eco-friendly living in Las Vegas. Here are eight tips for living green in Sin City.
1. Cut back on water waste by using low flow aerators on faucets. A $3 filter can reduce water flow by 50%, eliminating waste when water is left running while cooking or washing hands.
2. Make use of the arid Nevada air by hanging clothes out to dry instead of using energy tumbling them in a dryer.
3. When staying in Las Vegas hotels, avoid throwing towels and linens on the floor when you can reuse them. Many of the hotels only wash linens that were thrown on the floor, so hang your towel up for a second go-round to save money.
4. Navigate the city and surrounding areas via public transportation. When driving or taking a cab, try to carpool or share to save fuel.
5. Insulate windows to save over 50% on utility bills each month and cut back on energy use.
6. Recycling is an easy type of eco-friendly living. Reuse items like gift bags and containers and turn glass, plastic and aluminum bottles and cans in to recycling centers.
7. In the heat of a Vegas summer, you really do not need to soak in a hot shower or tub. Turn your water heater settings down a notch to save money and energy.
8. Drink tap water instead of bottled water to save on waste and transportation byproducts. If you are worried about water cleanliness, you can purchase a filter for your tap.
Eco-friendly living is important to a desert community like Las Vegas. Despite the opulent reputation the city has, resources like water are scarce. By taking small actions, those living in Las Vegas can make a big impact on the environment.
